Zero Surge was incorporated in March 1989 by J. Rudy Harford, President and Chief Engineer. As an independent consultant who designed and manufactured computer networks, Mr. Harford was given the challenge of reinventing the surge suppressor after a customer lost two television sets to power surges despite an investment in surge protection. When Mr. Harford examined the failed surge suppressors, he found that the basis for the protection was metal oxide varistors (MOVs), inexpensive components which failed in normal service, leaving no indication that the television sets were totally unprotected. He began thinking about circuit design alternatives to the unpredictable and failure-prone MOV type. Using computer-aided circuit design, Mr. Harford developed and patented a series-mode surge suppression circuit which protects against worst-case surges, unlike the suppressors on the market which often fail after minor surges. Mr. Harford currently holds 45 U.S. and over 300 worldwide patents, many of which were developed during his career as a senior electronics engineer at RCA for nearly 25 years. A testimony to the superiority of Zero Surge products is the fact that they have been tested not only for safety by Underwriters Laboratories® but also for performance and endurance under ULs optional 1449 Adjunct Classification program. Zero Surge products are certified to withstand at least 10 years of the worst case surges! Today, customers like Merck and Co., Inc., Hess Corp., U.S. Marine Corps, IBM, NASA, the FBI, Princeton University, Pillsbury Co., and thousands more businesses and consumers are realizing the benefits and cost savings by using Zero Surge products.
