CORDCONNECTED MODE 1

Definitions:
The definitions and parameters used in this specification follow current Federal Government purchasing guidelines published on the date of this specification. Testing for specification compliance is provided by the UL 1449 adjunct testing program (a testing program introduced by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., carrying UL designation, using ANSI C62.41 1991 test parameters). Performance certification is to be provided by a NRTL (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory), such as Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. NRTLs other than UL may also be offering the testing services described herein, and such testing labs and their test results to identical specifications are acceptable.

Grades A, B, C:
Grades A, B, and C specify endurance testing performance at different surge currents, (as described in detail in paragraph 3 following). Grade A is the highest classification, which signifies passing the most severe endurance conditions.

Class 1, 2, 3:
Class specifies the Suppressed Voltage Rating (SVR) under the endurance testing test conditions. Three specific levels of SVR are used, 330, 400, and 500 volts. An SVR of 330 volts means that during the endurance testing, the measured suppressed voltage (sometimes called letthrough voltage) did not exceed the SVR of 330 volts. This should not be confused with "clamping voltage" which often means the voltage at which clamping BEGINS, not the suppressed voltage under actual test conditions. Class 1 is the best classification, designating a product which allows the least amount of surge voltage into the protected equipment.

Mode 1, 2:
Mode specifies whether surges are diverted to the ground wire. Mode 1 is the ground protection mode, "LN mode", or "Normal Mode" which suppresses surges LinetoNeutral. Mode 2 is "All mode" suppression, which includes diversion to the ground wire.

1) Intended use:

Surge suppressors covered by this specification are intended to protect interconnected electronic equipment from both internal and external transient voltage surges in indoor facilities with electrical wiring including a neutral wire earthed at the service entrance.

Mode 1 suppressors are intended to be used with standalone or interconnected equipment. Interconnected equipment would include any equipment which has at least one electrical connection other than the powerline (telephone line, cable TV line, audio connection, network connection, printer connection, etc.). This specification is for mode 1 only. Since Mode 2 products divert surges to the powerline ground wire, they are not recommended for use in an interconnected electrical environment where the surges diverted from the powerline can enter sensitive video, audio and data ports which use that very same ground circuit as a voltage reference, permitting the diverted surges to disrupt or damage sensitive circuits.

The three grades of suppressor, Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C, are defined in detail in section 3 of this document, as are the three classes of suppressor, Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3. Products which do not meet any of the standard endurance and performance testing conditions offered as an adjunct to the UL 1449 safety testing as described herein, shall be classified as Grade D.

A product which meets Grade A, Classes 1-2 endurance and performance is recommended for the most severe electrical environments, where failure is unacceptable. Examples would be for critical computer applications such as accounting, administration, engineering, etc., where the loss of productivity or data would be very expensive. Other examples would be high rise apartments, retirement homes, hospitals, etc. where product failure is similarly unacceptable. Yet another example would be in areas of severe or frequent electrical surge activity, where electrical surge damage is highly probable.

A product which meets Grade B, Classes 1-3 endurance and performance is recommended for less critical applications and for areas of reduced electrical surge activity.

A product which meets Grade C, Classes 1-3 endurance and performance is recommended for the least critical applications, where the consequences of failure are minimal, or where electrical surge activity is minimal.

A Grade D product, which may be UL 1449 listed for safety, but has not been tested to even minimum endurance levels under the UL 1449 adjunct endurance and performance testing program, is not recommended, since no reliable service life has been established.

A Grade A product may be substituted for a Grade B or Grade C product. A Grade B product may be substituted for a Grade C product. A Class 1 product may be substituted for a Class 2 or Class 3 product. A Class 2 product may be substituted for a Class 3 product.

2) Listing:

Must be Listed with an NRTL such as Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), as meeting the safety requirements of UL 1449 Transient Voltage Surge Suppressors.

3) NRTL certified testing:

Must pass the UL 1449 adjunct endurance and performance testing for one of the Grades and Classes as follows:

    a) Grade A product: UL 1449 adjunct endurance testing to 1,000 surges minimum with B3 or C1 surge of 6,000 Volts, 3,000 Amperes, applied line to neutral. SVR (Suppressed Voltage Rating) of 330 volts (Class 1), 400 volts (Class 2), or 500 volts (Class 3) for 6,000 volts, 3,000 amperes, applied linetoneutral.

    b) Grade B product: UL 1449 adjunct endurance testing to 1,000 surges minimum with B2 combination wave surge of 4,000 Volts, 2,000 Amperes applied line to neutral. SVR (Suppressed Voltage Rating) 330 volts (Class 1), 400 volts (Class 2), or 500 volts (Class 3), for 4,000 volts, 2,000 amperes applied line to neutral.

    c) Grade C product: UL 1449 adjunct endurance testing to 1,000 surges minimum with B1 combination wave surge of 2,000 Volts, 1,000 Amperes applied line to neutral. SVR (Suppressed Voltage Rating) 330 volts (Class 1), 400 volts (Class 2), or 500 volts (Class 3), for 2,000 volts, 1,000 amperes applied line to neutral.

4) Manufacturer certified testing:

Must be certified by the manufacturer to meet the filter performance testing as follows: Must have at least 20 dB (10 times) signal rejection over a frequency range of 100 kHz to 1 MHz, when driven with a signal from a 2 ohm source over the test frequency range, with a resistive load of 15 amperes, 60 Hz. Laboratory test data for the frequency response including test equipment and test results must be made available on request.

5) Safety ground wire protection:

Manufacturer must certify that product does not include surge clamping components between the line (hot) wire and the safety ground wire.

6) Safety / performance certification:

The offerer shall provide a copy of the "Listing/Classification Page" to UL 1449 Safety Standard applicable to the product being offered, whether provided by UL or other NRTL. The NRTL safety listing page shall show the product type as being cord connected, 120 volts, single phase and line to neutral mode (Mode 1). The listing page shall also show UL 1449 adjunct classification endurance performance information, including the applicable location category (B1, B2, or B3) combination surge test waveform and line to neutral suppressed voltage rating for the Grade and Class of product being offered (see section 3 preceding for Grade A, Grade B, or Grade C, and Class 1, Class 2, or Class 3, classification parameters).
